Helsinki bicycle lanes 2025

Plans concerning bicycle lanes in Helsinki in 2025. The data consists of three plans: the Baana network 2025, the city centre bicycle network 2025 and the target network for bicycle traffic in the suburban areas.

Baana network 2025

Baanaverkko 2025 The network plan for Baana bicycle routes for 2025 partly meets the targets set by the city council for increasing bicycle traffic. The Baana routes will form the core bicycle routes that cover the entire city. The Baana network will comprise new sections as well as improved existing cycle paths. The network plan serves as a basis for space reservations and more detailed planning of Baana routes.

In particular, the Baana network plan responds to the growing demand for long-distance cycling routes. Baana routes are core cycle routes that connect the region’s largest residential areas with large workplace hubs and enable fast, direct and steady-speed cycle traffic in the city. The aim is to make cycling a more attractive option even over longer distances, so that the city’s target for more bicycle traffic can be met.

The entire city’s Baana network will be updated with the master plan.

City centre bicycle network 2025

The main network plan for the inner city aims to meet the needs of the increasing bicycle traffic and points the way to the development of the bicycle traffic infrastructure. The aim is to make cycling easier and safer, so that the city’s targets for more and safer cycling can be met.

The main network plan shows the main routes needed for bicycle traffic in the 2025 situation. The main routes form the backbone of the cycle network, which is complemented by other cycle routes and connections. The plan specifies indicative one-way and two-way cycle traffic arrangements as well as mixed traffic arrangements where cyclists share the same space with other vehicles. In other respects, the quality of the traffic arrangements has not been taken a stand on; the plans will be specified on a case-by-case basis.

With the help of common international quality criteria, the following quality objectives have been set for the target cycling network: safety, straightness, ease of use and pleasantness.

Target network for bicycle traffic in the suburban areas

The target network for the suburban areas together with the bicycle traffic planning instructions www.pyoraliikenne.hel.fi provide guidelines for the development of bicycle traffic in suburban areas. In the near future, the focus of bicycle traffic projects will be on expanding the inner city target network and the Baana network. In the suburban areas, the development of cycle traffic will primarily be focused on the expansion of the Baana network. In the context of suburban planning projects, it is important to identify the target status in order to create opportunities for the future development of cycle traffic in line with growth targets.

In suburban areas, the development of cycle traffic is not focused on increasing the number of cycle paths or lanes, but on providing direct, smooth and safe routes. The need for a cycling arrangement, such as a cycle path or cycle lane, is primarily determined by the volume of traffic. More detailed planning will define traffic arrangements according to local conditions. However, separate cycle paths or lanes are not always needed, and good cycling conditions can often be achieved by calming traffic. A section marked on the target network may therefore also refer to the route on which cycle traffic is directed to the driving lane. Clarifying the transport network hierarchy and calming traffic in increasingly large areas are excellent and effective ways to achieve cycling conditions in line with the growth target. The new target network will replace the target network 2015 plan for the main routes approved by the Transport Planning Unit in 2008. The Baana network included in the plan is in accordance with the master plan approved on 26 October 2016 and replaces the Baana network approved by the City Planning Committee on 5 March 2013. The Baana network has also been revised for the inner city in accordance with the master plan.

The data set is not updated anymore.
