Chlorophyll-a daily product for the Baltic Sea 2003-2011


Satellite remote sensing is used to monitor the chlorophyll-a (ug/l) of surface water in the Baltic Sea during the open water season from April to October. Chlorophyll-a (chl-a) represents the quantity of algae in the water but not directly the amount of cyanobacterium. A daily chlorophyll-a product is calculated in the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) using Envisat MERIS (Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) 3rd Reprocessing data. Satellite data have been processed to chl-a concentrations using FUB (Freie University of Berlin) algorithm. The dataset covers years 2003-2011. The spatial resolution is 300 meters.

Suomen ympäristökeskuksessa (SYKE) seurataan satelliittikuvilta Itämeren a-klorofyllipitoisuutta (ug/l) sulan veden aikaan. A-klorofyllin avulla voidaan arvioida levän määrää vedessä. Se on myös keskeinen tekijä veden rehevyystason arvioinnissa. A-klorofyllin määrä on laskettu Envisat MERIS (Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) -instrumentin 3rd Reprocessing -datasta käyttäen FUB (Freie University of Berlin) -vedenlaatuprosessoria. Aineisto koostuu vuosien 2003-2011 päivittäisistä kuvista. Kuvien maastoerotuskyky on 300 metriä. Aineisto kuuluu SYKEn avoimiin aineistoihin (CC BY 4.0).

Chlorophyll-a daily product in the Baltic Sea from April to October in 2003-2011. Satellite images of the region are available daily. However, ice conditions or cloud cover may have prevented the estimation of chl-a in some portion of the Baltic Sea or the entire region.

Purpose of use: Monitoring of water quality in the Baltic Sea.

ENVISAT MERIS (Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) 3rd Reprocessing data from years 2003-2011 has been used to compile water quality products from the Baltic Sea.

Processing history: The ENVISAT MERIS images have been received from ESA Envisat web file server. The dataset has been processed to chlorophyll-a concentrations in SYKE using the FUB algorithm (Freie University of Berlin), which includes athmospheric correction. A manual cloud correction and quality check have been performed for every daily image.
